Despite the adverse reports about a lacklustre sales performance, Apple doesn’t seem ready to abandon the iPhone mini yet. The iPhone 13 mini was unveiled at its annual, all-singing and all-dancing launch event on September 14, and it is a smaller, cheaper alternative that appears to be as capable as the rest.
The iPhone 13 mini is small in size but not lacking in power. It shares the same A15 Bionic processor that the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models. Apple claims that this CPU is 5nm and six-core, which is half the speed of “the leading competitor” (presumably, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8888) and 40% faster for graphics processing.
Last year’s model had a significant drawback, with a battery life that was barely adequate for 15 hours. However, Apple appears to have somewhat addressed this issue by making the battery larger. Apple claims that the iPhone 13 mini is 1.5 hours more durable than last year’s model. Storage options have been improved, with 128GB available as a standard and 256GB and512GB non-expandable storage.
The iPhone 13 mini measures only 5.4 in width, but it packs the same display tech and features as the iPhone 13. The screen is an AMOLED panel with Dolby Vision playback, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision support. It also supports a 60Hz refresh rate. Although it doesn’t have the adaptive 120Hz setting like the Pro Max and Pro Max models, you won’t be disappointed at the price.
Very little has been changed in terms of design. The physical features are all the same as before. However, the dual rear cameras now sit diagonally instead of being stacked above each other. Although the all-metal frame is still sharp and sleek, it has been slightly reduced in size. It also comes in a variety of colours, including pink, midnight, starlight, and “product red”.
The iPhone 13 mini’s camera capabilities are a little different. The iPhone 13 mini’s primary 12MP (f/1.6 camera) captures 47% more light than the previous model. It also features Apple’s superb sensor shift optical image stabilisation which was only available to Apple’s expensive iPhone 12 Pro Max.
A 12MP (f/2.4), ultra-wide camera has a 120-degree view angle. The “Cinematic” mode is a new recording mode that allows you to seamlessly transition between focus points at any time.
