The iPhone 12 Pro is an excellent choice for serious artists who don’t need a large phone. It packs exceptional imaging and video capabilities into a small, elegantly designed device.

PROS

  • Amazing night photography capabilities
  • Optical zoom camera
  • iOS is home to the best third-party photos apps
  • Beautiful design
  • Solid battery life

CONS

  • Technically, only a 2x optical zoom camera
  • AT&T 5G and Verizon 5G are underwhelming
  • It isn’t easy to understand the power adapter and charging situation

As a brief introduction, the iPhone 12 Pro is the best value of the four models in Apple’s iPhone 12 range if you are serious about video and photography. For those who use their iPhone as a camera, the 12 Pro’s LiDAR sensor and Night Portrait mode are unavailable on lower-cost models. The extra money will make the 12 Pro worth it.

The iPhone 12 lineup includes four identical models: the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max. This brief overview will show you how the iPhone 12 Pro compares to the iPhone 12 models and why it was our Editors’ Choice.

Pro Camera Power

The iPhone 12 Pro measures 0.29 by 5.78 inches by 2.82 inches, 6.66ozs, and has a very similar OLED screen of 6.1 inches. Apple claims it is brighter, but we can’t see any difference. Although they look identical from the front, you can distinguish them from the back due to the different camera modules and body materials. The 12 Pro features a matte back with four low-key colours and a shiny stainless steel band around its edge.

A shiny, stainless steel band surrounds the edge.

The 12 Pro’s features and components are almost identical to the iPhone 12. The same Apple A14 processor is in place, but it has 6GB RAM instead of 4GB and 128GB storage instead of 64GB. It’s safe to say that the Pro models are photographers and videographers’ phones.

The 12 Pro adds a 12-megapixel, ultra-wide and 12-megapixel wide camera. The front cameras of both the 12 and 12 Pro are 12MP.

Apple claims that the Pro can zoom out to “4x” with its wide-angle camera at 0.5x. This is not how most people think of zoom. Wide-angle cameras are not the default. In the camera app, you can still see the three Photo settings as 0.5x-1x and 2x.

The 2x zoom (not 4x) makes a noticeable difference. As you can see, zoom images are sharper than you would expect from using digital rather than optical zoom.

However, the 2x zoom is only 2x. The iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max features a true 5x optical zoom that is even stronger. This zoom looks incredible when you shoot at 5x or 10x. (This is 2x digital zoom for the 5x optical). Because of the differences in their approaches to camera apps, the difference between iPhone and Galaxy Note is hard to distinguish. The Galaxy Note’s camera app has video and pro photo modes that allow casual users to adjust aperture, shutter speed, or even the microphone used by their video camera.

Pro camera apps for iOS are more potent than the Samsung-simplified pro mode, but they can be harder to use. However, professional creatives vote with their wallets, and the majority of them use iOS.

The iPhone 12 Pro’s photo skills shine in Night Mode. Night Portrait Mode is enabled by the LiDAR scanner, which speeds up autofocus and accelerates autofocus. The iPhone 11 Pro can match the 12 Pro’s Telephoto Lens, but it can’t compete with the older model in low light.

My iPhone 12 Pro Night Portrait photos had a completely different texture from my regular Night mode shots: they were smoother, softer, and dreamier. They are stunning.

Pro photographers will love the 12 Pro’s photo and video features, although I find them a bit too much for casual photographers. Apple’s ProRAW mode allows photo enthusiasts to remove layers from Apple’s photo processing, reapply them individually, or modify each layer to their liking.

The Pro has better Dolby vision support. It can capture DolbyVision HDR video at 60 frames per second, while the iPhone 12 captures it at 30 frames per second. However, it can also capture non-DolbyVision videos at 60 frames.

The only difference between the iPhone 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max is the camera. They run the same software and benchmark the same. They use the same size batteries, have the same charging capabilities, and have the same call quality.
