The Apple iPhone 12 range is now divided into four models: the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro and this iPhone 12 Pro Max. This gives us more options than ever when it comes down to purchasing the flagship model.
Mini to max: Which iPhone 12 should I buy?
They all have the same processors, same 5G connectivity, and the same screen tech (albeit at different sizes), but there are many differences if you take a closer look. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is the most expensive model, featuring a large screen and better cameras.
We’ve tested the supersize model to find out if the iPhone is just more significant than others.
New design, screen
- All-screen OLED display 6.7 inches, 2778×1284 resolution (458ppi).
- Dimensions: 160.8×78.1x 7.4mm/Weight: 228g
- Finishes: Graphite and Silver, Gold, Pacific Blue
- Ceramic shield screen, IP68 protection
The new 2020 iPhones have a sleek, modern design that aligns with the iPad Pro and Air models. If you want to go back in time, the iPhone 4 was released in 2010.
This design change, which keeps the Lightning port, buttons, and speakers in the same places as before, has many benefits. The 12 Pro Max has a larger screen than the iPhone 11 Pro Max in 2019, measuring 6.7 inches compared to 6.5 inches. This is despite a smaller footprint. The 12 Pro Max is slightly thinner than its predecessor if you count.
The screen bezel is still there – Apple hasn’t gone all Samsung yet. However, the flat surgical-grade stainless steel band around the device makes it appear thinner.
The screen is also significant, but Apple believes that people want larger screens. This is an Apple Super Retina XDR screen that’s HDR Dolby Vision-ready and has True Tone technology to adapt the colours to your surroundings. It works the same way as the iPhone 12 models, but it’s larger.
It’s beautiful, no matter if you’re watching the latest video, reading an email or checking Netflix, it’s all wonderful. Visually, there is nothing to be unhappy about. It can be heavy if it’s too large. If you hold it one-handed, you might feel it. But, a quick FaceTime call will make you want to end it.
Colours
The 12 Pro Max is available in four colours: Graphite (Silver), Gold (Gold), and a new Pacific Blue. You’ll either love or hate the gold. The frosted glass back helps to tone things down, but it is much more neutral.
The phone’s three cameras are located in the upper left corner. They include a LiDAR scanner and flash, as well as a microphone. The camera enclosure for the Max is significantly larger because the new sensor configurations are different than the iPhone 12 Pro model. This is one of the main features of the Max.
Performance and battery
- Apple A14 processor
- 3,687mAh battery
- Fast-Charge 20W
- 5G connectivity
The Pro Max, like the iPhone 12 phones, is powered by Apple’s A14 processor. It is faster than the iPhone 12 processor and loads apps and games quicker than the last year, but it focuses its power on ensuring the iPhone can handle the image and video processing that you ask it to.
5G
There is also 5G connectivity. This will change the way you see the world depending on where you are. As we saw with the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro, the Pro Max speeds up just as fast when you have 5G connectivity. Depending on where you are and your network, you can download and upload speeds of hundreds to thousands of Mbps.
5G is not just about speed. It will increase latency, among other things. This will allow for online gaming to be improved, as well as apps we haven’t even thought of.
Consider 5G as an investment in the future, and not something that you will be able to benefit from immediately. Apple’s iPhone 12 range uses 5G only when it is available and you require it. This helps save battery life. 5G is not necessary when you have your phone in your pocket or reading an email.
Software – iOS 14
Like the rest of the iPhone 12 series, the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max runs iOS 14. This software includes various features, including widgets on the home screen and App Clips to Messages and Maps improvement.
The software is available on all iPhones starting with the iPhone 6S or later, so many features are not exclusive to the iPhone 12 line. While some features aren’t available on the iPhone 12 series, like Night Mode for the front camera, the software experience is the same as any other iPhone.
This makes it easy to upgrade (but with the beauty and larger display if you upgrade from Touch ID models). It is also relatively simple, although more closed-off, for those who move from Android.
Cameras
- Triple rear cameras:
- Main: 12-megapixels, f/1.6 aperture. Optic image stabilisation (OIS).
- Telephoto (5x optical zoom), 12MP, f/2.2 OIS
- Ultra-wide (0.5x), 12MP, f/2.4
- LiDAR scanner
- 12MP selfie camera
- Dolby Vision video capture
The cameras are the most significant difference between the iPhone 12 Pro Max and Pro Max. The iPhone 12 Pro Max’s cameras are better. It’s not always easy.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro Max have identical 12-megapixel cameras, but the focal lengths of the main sensor and their ability to do so differ. Both phones have the same ultra-wide lens. The Pro Max’s main camera has 1.7um more pixels because it has a larger sensor.
The telephoto lens is where things look very different. The Pro Max has a 5x optical zoom, compared to the iPhone 12 Pro’s 4x. This allows it to reach further and makes distant subjects seem closer. The Pro Max has sensor-shift optical imaging stabilisation that helps eliminate handshakes and makes it easier to take sharp shots.
It is also notable that the 12 Pro Max can quickly capture pictures in low light conditions. This means that you don’t need to rely on Apple Night Mode, which can take up 3 seconds to capture a shot. It also means that blurry shots are less likely.
Although it’s harder to see, you can see more detail on the iPhone 12 Pro Max images than in the iPhone 12 Pro images. It’s not surprising, considering the Pro Max’s larger main sensor. Here are some side-by-side comparisons.
Both the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Pro Max can take stunning photos, but in certain instances, the iPhone 12 Pro Max may take a better picture. It all depends on how detailed you like to look at the results. We believe that a lot of the photo’s power is due to the speed of processing in the background. This allows you to improve, tweak, and enhance your photos to their best look in a matter of milliseconds.
MagSafe
Wireless charging is also available, but Apple now offers MagSafe wireless charging. It’s a wireless charging puck that attaches to your iPhone 12 Pro Max using magnets.
This is an optional additional, but it works great. It delivers a faster charging time than traditional wireless pads and allows you to charge the Lightning port while simultaneously using the Lightning port. We’ve also found this handy if you use an external microphone when filming.
NIX Verdict
The iPhone 12 Pro Max Max is the most expensive and comprehensive iPhone in the 2020 lineup. It’s because the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a lot to offer: The screen is huge, the cameras are outstanding, and the overall performance is exceptional.
There are some noticeable differences between the cameras of the different models. The primary sensor is more extensive and has in-body stabilisation. The telephoto lens has more reach, but not so much that you need to buy this model to take great photos. We believe that the iPhone 12 Pro will prove to be more than adequate for many.
