Your SIM card will be updated with a new number when you sign up for a new mobile plan from another network. It can be so complicated to change numbers, why not keep your old one?

You can keep your old number if you switch from one UK network to another UK network. Just transfer it to your new SIM card.

This is how it works and answers to some questions about number porting.

Follow these steps to keep your number when changing your SIM deal.

How to keep your number

Follow these steps to keep your old mobile number active on a new network. These steps apply to any mobile phone contract, SIM-only deal or pay-as-you-go plan.

  • Switch now
  • First, ensure that you are not in contract with your current plan. Otherwise, you could face penalties. You can switch to a new deal if all goes well.
  • You may want to transfer any contact information stored on your SIM card to your new phone, your Google account, Apple ID or another cloud service.
  • Choose a new deal
  • You can find a new mobile deal you like and switch to. CompareMyMobile has all the SIM and mobile contracts we offer. Click through to view the details and order the SIM deal from the provider.
  • Your new SIM card will arrive with a temporary number. Not for long!
  • Get your PAC
  • Ask your network for a PAC (porting authorization code). It should contain three letters and six numbers like ABC123456.
  • You can either call the customer service number or fill out an online form to request one.
  • It’s your chance to give it to your new network.
  • Next, call your new network and tell them about your PAC. This can be done by phone or online if preferred.
  • This must be done within 30 days after you receive the PAC. Otherwise, it will expire.
  • You’re done!
  • This is it! Your old number will be transferred to your new SIM. Although it can be done within 24 hours, it might take longer.

You will be given specific instructions by your network to follow the day of the transfer. These should not be difficult. For example, you will need to ensure that your new SIM card is installed in your phone.

FAQ

  • What is the average time it takes to change my number?
  • It all depends on the network you are switching between, and when you request it. However, most ports are completed within a few days. Sometimes, a number port is available the next day after you order.
  • What happens if I lose my service?
  • Yes, your service will likely be cut off on the day you transfer your SIM. At least, for a short time. You might lose service for a few minutes or even hours, depending on the situation.
  • If your service is not available for an extended period of time, you can try turning the phone on and off again. This will allow you to reconnect with your SIM. If your phone is still not finished porting at the end of each day, and you are still experiencing service interruptions, please contact your network.
  • It is a good idea prepare for transfer day. Be prepared for a brief interruption in service. Keep your Wi-Fi up and running, it will still be fine. Let your contacts know that you won’t be able to use your number for a while.
  • Many networks will send you a text message when port starts, or let you know the day.
  • What should I do if my PAN expires?
  • It’s not a problem. You can call your old network and request a new one.
  • What is the best time to cancel my plan with an old network?
