FaceTime was initially launched with iPhone 4 in 2010. It could only be downloaded and used on devices that run iOS. But, all of this is about to change. Apple’s Worldwide Development Conference, June 2021, announced that FaceTime would soon be available for Android and Windows devices. We will be discussing this update in more detail below.
FaceTime for Android and Windows
However, it is worth noting that FaceTime will still be available on non-Apple devices in autumn 2021. However, you’ll need an Apple account and an invitation from your Apple device to gain access.
Here’s how it might work:
- Android and Windows users can use FaceTime Link instead of downloading the app directly to access this service.
- FaceTime links must be sent using an Apple device such as an iPhone, iPad, or MacBook logged into an Apple account.
- After receiving a FaceTime Link from an Apple user, tap on the invite to join the call at the correct time and date.
- You can then call the number using the web browser app installed on your Android/Windows device such as Chrome, Edge or Edge.
FaceTime New Features
Apple’s WWDC saw several new FaceTime features announced. These features will be available in iOS 15. Here are the main takeaways.
Spatial Sound
Apple claims that this setting will make voices sound more precise about where they are on the call. This means that each participant should sound like their voice comes from the screen where they are positioned, such as the top left or bottom right. New microphone settings onboard will help filter out any other noise and allow each participant’s voice to stand out.
FaceTime – More Faces
The tech giant also stated that FaceTime should allow more people to join a single call simultaneously. The current limit is 32 participants. This is significantly lower than other video calling apps, such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
SharePlay
SharePlay is a new feature that makes FaceTime more enjoyable for shared experiences. It allows a group to listen to a song or view a video in a group call. You can screen share during calls and interact with others while viewing an image or YouTube clip as a group using SharePlay.
Apple has confirmed that SharePlay will soon work with major streaming platforms such as TikTok and HBO Max. This makes this feature even more popular. This update will allow you to watch your favourite shows on the move, even if you live across the country.
