You might assume that it is impossible to open Zip files on Android if you don’t know how. Zip files are usually associated with laptops and desktops. However, Android can open Zip files with the right software. This software is usually included on your phone.

It is worth noting that this method uses Google’s Files app. This isn’t necessarily the only way to access Zip files on Android. My Files, the file management software that comes pre-installed with recent Samsung phones works almost identically. Other companies may have similar apps.

Many apps allow you to open multiple compressed file types, such as 7z, GZ, Tar, RAR, CAB, etc.

The steps below can be used to fix any Android 5.0 or higher phone. This should be sufficient for most handsets, as Android 5 is seven years old.

How do I open zip files on Android?

  1. Get Files by Google if you don’t have it. Go to the Google Play Store on your Android phone and search for it. Be wary of imitations. The original will not have the “Google LLC” designation as its creator. Once you have found the right app, click “Install”.
  2. You will need to grant the app permission to access your files when you first open the app. Tap the blue “Allow” button.
  3. This will take you to the following page in the Android Settings. To return to the app, tap the switch beside “Allow access for all files” and then press the back button.
  4. Now, open the app and locate your Zip file. It may have been sent to you as an attachment, or downloaded from the internet. If it isn’t, you can use the magnifying glass search option at the top. You can also scroll down to see your internal storage folders by folder as though it were a desktop computer.
  5. Simply tap the Zip file once you have found it.
  6. Files by Google will provide a summary of all the contents in the Zip file. Tap “Extract” if everything is as expected.
  7. The summary of all files extracted will be displayed. You have the option to delete the Zip file to free up space. Click “Finished” to confirm.
  8. And you’re done! You’re done! You can find the file’s location by tapping on one of the three dots at its side. Share, rename and delete.
