Facebook Messenger’s most recent update allows you share your iPhone screen with family and friends. Here’s how it works.

Have you ever been on a video chat with a family member or friend, trying to explain to them how to use their device? It can be frustrating to not be able to see their screen. Facebook is aware of this and has created a screen sharing feature similar to Zoom and Skype. It allows iPhone, iPad, Android, and web users to share their displays.

The tech has some limitations. It’s not available in chats with up to 8 people or 16 if you have a Messenger Room. However, Facebook stated that it is looking to expand support to Rooms to as many people as possible shortly. How do you use this new feature on your iPhone? Continue reading to learn more.

How do you screen share using Messenger on iPhone or iPad

Although our example of helping a friend with a tech problem might seem a little niche, it would be great to be able quickly to show your closest friends all the photos you took on holiday using your iPhone. Here’s how to share your screen through Facebook Messenger.

Install the latest version of Facebook Messenger on your iPhone and iPad.

You can open the Messenger app to start a video chat with the person or group you wish to share your screen with. There is a maximum of 8 people per chat and 16 per Messenger Room.

  • Tap on the video call icon to initiate a video conference.
  • To view more options, swipe up on the control bar located at the bottom of your chat.
  • Click the Share Your Screen button.
  • Tap to Start Sharing.
  • Tap Start Broadcast.

After you tap Start Broadcast, everyone in the call will be able to see your iPhone/iPad display. It is worth noting that the Messenger app will also share any notifications banners that appear on the screen. We recommend turning on Do Not Disturb whenever sharing your display. You can close Messenger and continue using your iPhone or iPad as usual, while others on the call will be able to see your screen.

You can stop sharing by simply reopening the Messenger app.
