It’s your choice whether or not to upgrade. Every year, it’s an inner struggle that many of us must deal with when Apple announces its latest devices. The iPhone 13 is no exception.

It’s easy to fall for the iPhone 13 at first glance.

Tim Cook and Apple colleagues have presented new features, add-ons and shiny colours. There are many other factors to consider before deciding whether or not to proceed.

Let’s take a look at how the iPhone 13 compares to its predecessor, the iPhone 12. That was the new hot toy 12 months ago, with our review describing it as “excellent in almost all ways.” The iPhone 13 is a leap forward, with lots of incentives available for those willing to jump. It’s much easier to compare these two giants to find out how they stack up against each other.

Notice: There were four new iPhone models announced: iPhone 13 Mini (iPhone 13 Pro), iPhone 13 Pro Max (iPhone 13 Pro Max) – but we will only be focusing on the standard models in this comparison.

Release date and price

The important question of price. Let’s get to the point. The iPhone 12 was launched at £799 and had 64GB storage. Apple now states that the iPhone 13 will be available at the same price but with 128GB storage, which gives you more bang for your bucks.

The release date of the iPhone 13 has been set for 24th September. Pre-orders will go live on 17th September, but they are expected to be available a week earlier. This is slightly sooner than the iPhone 12, which was available for pre-order on 16th October, and shipped on 23rd October 2020.

Design

The iPad Air 2020 is again the inspiration for the iPhone 13, something that the iPhone 12 did. Apple has taken this design more seriously, with a flat design that is more durable and a sturdy aluminium frame that has become a standard. It retains the Ceramic Shield and an IP68 rating for waterproofing. The most significant change is the redesign of the rear camera layout, which has diagonally arranged lenses.

The ones found on its predecessor are not linear. The pair can be separated by very little other than this.

For the most part, the colour options between the two devices are pretty different. The iPhone 12 was launched in black, red, green, and blue. The iPhone 13 will be available in pink, midnight, starlight, and (product) rouge.

Camera

Apple claims that the iPhone 13 has the most advanced dual-camera system on iPhone. The new 12-megapixel wide camera is accompanied by a sensor-shift optical imaging stabilisation (OIS), which helps reduce shakiness and improve low-light photography and videos.

Although the TrueDepth camera system is smaller than the iPhone 12, it has not reduced the tech inside. The company also offers the Cinematic mode, which is designed to attract more filmmakers. iOS 15 will introduce a Portrait mode for FaceTime calls. Focus helps reduce background noise.

Performance/Battery

The A15 Bionic has made it possible to extend the smartphone’s battery life by allowing for two and a half hours more per day.

It is also said that components run more efficiently, so everything should run a little faster in theory.

The small upgrades with the iPhone 13 really add up to a better experience.

Screen

The iPhone 12 was the first to switch from an LCD panel to OLED displays. The iPhone 13 is 28% brighter than the iPhone 12. The screen size is identical at 6.9 inches. It also retains the 60Hz screens and promises to use less power. However, it’s not quite at the same levels as the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, which both offer 120hz.

Early Verdict

While the iPhone 13 is not a significant upgrade from the iPhone 12, it is easy to overlook the impact these small touches can have on people who care about upgrading. The iPhone 13 offers more battery life, 64GB storage, a better rear-camera layout, and more colours. The question is more about whether this is enough for you.
