Although, it technically isn’t glass

LG today announced a new folding-glass technology that is both better and more affordable than the competitor. However, technically it’s not glass, but rather the same plastic used to make fizzy drink bottles. It is called polyethylene terephthalate (or PET) for short.

LG decided to name this new technology Realfolding Window, which is a move in the right direction for marketing purposes. They plan to mass-produce the component for consumers sometime in 2023, as they believe it will be easier to market.

It’s not clear if this will be used for LG smartphones or as a part available for other smartphone manufacturers to order, but LG likely wants other companies to join them to maximise their R&D efforts.

LG does not usually disclose trade secrets; however, they explain that Real Folding Window technology is a thin PET plastic piece covered on both sides with a specialised coating LG developed. This helps foldable displays retain their durability and reduce visible creases. LG claims that it is as tough as glass, but has folding areas as flexible as plastic.

Foldable devices are becoming mainstream. Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 3 smartphone and Fold 3 smartphone have been recently launched, with critics praising the foldable smartphone as superior to traditional flagship models.

Samsung decided to skip the Galaxy Note upgrade this year in order to focus more on their Galaxy Z line.
