Samsung’s Galaxy S21 range, which includes the S21+, S21+, and S21 Ultra, was unveiled in January 2021. This means that its successors won’t be out for several months.

However, speculations about the Galaxy S22 series have not stopped. Rumours abound about the devices. For now, the Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra are the most likely.

We have everything we know so far about Samsung Galaxy S22.

Date and price

  • January 2022
  • Starting at £769

As we have already mentioned, the Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra were announced in January 2021. However, this was earlier than what is usual for the launch of its Galaxy S series. The range was first revealed in February and made available by March 2021.

It is not clear if January will be the new timeline or if Samsung will go back to its old pattern. There is also the possibility that the Galaxy S22 range will have a different timeline, particularly since the Galaxy Note 21 is not happening this year.

The Galaxy S21 is priced at £769 in the UK. The Galaxy S21+ is priced at £949, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra at £1,149. Although the successors will likely be in the same ballpark, it’s too early for us to know.

Design

-Glasstic standard model

-Housings for prominent cameras

-S22 Ultra Support: S Pen

Like the S21 range, the design elements of the Samsung Galaxy S22 will likely be shared. While there will be some changes to the S22 range compared with the 2021 range, these changes may be smaller than those made to the S20 range or S21 range. Rumours suggest that there will be a minor modification but not a significant one.

Premium handsets are expected across the entire range. However, at least the S22 standard will likely choose a plastic back instead of glass as the S21 did. All S22 models will be waterproofed and USB Type-C charged.

If under-display camera technology does not take off, we would expect a prominent housing for the camera on all models and a punch-hole front camera. It’s unlikely that it will, though. S Pen support will likely be available on the S22 Ultra, but it would be wonderful to see this extended to the Plus model.

Changes between the S22 and last year's Galaxy S21 range.

Display

-6.06 inches to 6.81 inches

-Full HD+ for Plus and Standard models possible

-120Hz refresh rate

The Samsung Galaxy S21’s 6.2-inch screen has the S21+’s 6.7-inch display. The S21 Ultra’s 6.8-inch display is on the S21 Ultra. It is not clear whether Samsung will offer three devices within the S22 range or if they will keep the same sizes. Rumours say that all three devices will shrink in size. The S22 has a 6.06-inch display, while the S22+ has a 6.55-inch and the S22 Ultra has a 6.81-inch screen.

The S22+ and the S22+ will offer Full HD+ resolutions, along with flat displays, just like the S21+ and S21+. While the S22 Ultra will likely continue to provide higher resolutions and a curved display, but for now, it’s speculation.

All S22 models will support HDR and a 120Hz refresh speed. However, it is claimed that only the S22 Ultra will have a variable refresh rate.

Hardware and specifications

-Exynos and Qualcomm Snapdragon next-generation chipsets

-Minimum 8GB RAM

-No charger in the box

It’s unclear at the moment what the Samsung Galaxy S22 will bring to the table. In terms of hardware, it will likely have the next flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon processor – which is expected to be revealed in December – or the next-gen Exynos 2220 chipset with AMD depending on where you are located.

Other specs suggest that the S22 will have at least 8GB RAM and a base model with at least 128GB storage. We don’t believe the S21 range has microSD support, so it is unlikely that they will bring this back.

It is almost certain that all S22 handsets are 5G compatible. We also expect the S22 to support fast charging and wireless charging. Samsung has confirmed that the charger won’t come in the box, a move Apple made with its iPhone 12 series. Rumours suggest that the Galaxy S22 will come with a 3800mAh battery, while the S22+ will have a 4600mAh and the Galaxy S22 Ultra will have a 5000mAh battery.

Camera

No ToF sensor

Collaborations to come?

Some reports suggest that Samsung is developing a 200-megapixel camera sensor. This could be integrated into the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Other rumours indicate that Samsung is also looking into sensor-shift technology. The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers this feature, and there has been talk about a new periscope lens that can freely move lenses between 3X-10X zoom.

The Galaxy S22 will not be receiving the ToF sensor’s return, as it did on the S21 model.

Rumours also suggest that the triple rear camera of the Galaxy S22 will include a 50-megapixel primary camera, two 12-megapixel sensors for ultrawide, telephoto and telephoto. The telephoto camera can be capable of 3X zoom. This setup will be shared by the Galaxy S22+, according to rumours.
