Apple has made significant improvements in the CPU capacity of its handsets over the years. This tech evolution can be seen by releasing the A13 Bionic chip and the A14 Bionic chip. These chips offer a host of new possibilities for iOS users.

Which handsets are they powered? What are the main differences between them? How do they compare?

Compatible Handsets

In 2019, the A13 Bionic Chip was introduced to the iPhone 11 range as the processor. It was also selected to power the second-generation iPhone SE in 2020. The A14 Bionic was launched in 2020 as the processor for iPad Air 4. After its launch in the autumn, it made a massive splash by playing a key role in the entire iPhone 12 range.

Capacity of chips

The A13 Bionic Chip, featured in iPhone XR and iPhone XS, made significant improvements over the A12 Chip.
It is built on 7nm technology, but has six CPU cores that offer greater processing power than its predecessor. Lightning is home to two cores that run at 2.66 GHz. These cores have been paired up with four efficiency cores, Thunder. The A13’s processor is Apple-designed and features quad-core graphics, an LTE modem and 8.5 billion transistors. This makes it 30% more efficient than the A12 Chip. The handsets can also provide five more hours of battery life than the ones before them.

Operation

Apple announced the A14 Bionic chip, making it the first 5nm commercially available chipset. It also features 11.8 billion transistors. This could make it the most efficient Apple chipset to date.

Apple has added a 64-bit six Core CPU to its A13 Bionic. This is to build on the A13 Bionic’s success. This split is 40% faster than A12. It has four efficiency-focused cores called Icestorm, plus two cores with high performance, Firestorm.

For the gamers and the creatives

Its faster processor, efficiency, and ability to boost the iPhone 11 range give creatives and gamers more options. The A13 is equipped with a quad-core GPU designed by Apple, allowing gamers to enjoy graphics that are 20% faster than any other chipset and 40% less power than phones using the A12.

Apple continued the GPU-powered A13’s success and developed some new features that make graphics sharper and offer more creative possibilities. The A14’s position in the iPad Air series has led to more attention being paid to enhancing creative tasks like illustrations, video rendering and image processing. Apple’s GPU performance has improved by more than 8% compared to its A13 counterpart.

Artificial Intelligence capabilities

These chips offer two key performance indicators: they can provide AI performance that is both user-friendly and more efficient than ever before.

The A13 Bionic’s eight-core neural engine can perform around six trillion operations per second. This special neural network hardware uses 15% less power than A12 and runs at 20% faster speeds.

Apple, however, took this blueprint and added eight cores to its A14 chip’s artificial intelligence engine. This has increased its speed to 11 billion operations per second.
