Officially unveiled, the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are now available with a new design and a brand new processor.
Google pulled the covers off its new flagship smartphones, the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Google Pixel 6 Pro, almost without warning. Both handsets were announced via a press release and a series of tweets and spoilt by a healthy dose of leaks. They represent a major upgrade to the Pixel line. From the bold new design to their hardware, it’s safe to say that this is more than just an iterative update.
What’s new? It’s evident that the new look is striking, but Google has taken great pains to emphasize that the real story lies beneath it.
Although we don’t know how powerful the Tensor chipset is, it’s important to remember that speed is not everything. Google claims that it has replaced the old camera sensor in the Google Pixel 5 (the one used inside the Pixel 2) with one designed explicitly for Tensor. We have high expectations for the rear snapper of the Pixel 6/6 Pro. Google Assistant will benefit from the Tensor chipset, which will also allow for translation, captioning, and dictation, which requires voice recognition.
Let’s start from the outside and work our ways in. #Pixel6 Pro is available in three colour combinations. #Pixel6 also offers three colour combinations.
The exterior of both Pixel 6 handsets has a camera bump (or “bar”) that runs horizontally from edge to edge. Google claims that the Pro Pixel 6 can be distinguished from the regular Pixel 6 by its larger space between the top and the camera bump. However, the differences do not end there.
The new, striking camera housing conceals two lenses for the Pixel 6 Pro and three lenses for the Pixel 6 Pro. Google has not yet clarified which lenses play what roles, but leaks indicate that the primary snapper of the Pixel 6 is paired up with an ultrawide lens.
The colours, camera, form, and display on the screen all combine to create a seamless experience.
You’ll notice that the selfie camera is now located towards the top of the display when you flip the phone. The display is still a mystery. Leaked by Marques Brownlee, the Pixel 6 Pro measures approximately 6.7in across its diagonal. This makes it about the same size as an iPhone 12 Pro Max and, therefore, quite large. The specifications of the displays have not been revealed.
Google’s Material You research, announced at Google I/O 2021, will run Android 12 on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. This research is designed to make the user interface as easy and fun as possible. Tensor’s Titan M2 security chips will ensure that the new handsets are unprecedentedly secure.
We don’t know anything about the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. They will be available in three colours (like the one pictured at the top) and will be made from either matte or polished aluminium. We know that the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro will be available in autumn this year. More information can be found on the Made by Google Twitter Page.
