Go Roam may be finished, but your Three phone can still be used abroad for no additional cost if you know how.
You don’t need to pay high roaming fees when you travel. Three has revoked its Go Roam policy, which allowed travellers to use their plans in selected countries without extra cost. However, there are still ways you can enjoy the benefits of this feature now that it’s gone.
What is roaming?
Roaming refers to when your standard phone plan is used in another region than the one intended for, so you can still use your SIM or device abroad to make calls, text, and access the internet.
The downside is that roaming can lead to substantial charges. Most carriers and networks charge additional fees for each message, minute, or megabyte sent outside your plan’s region.
Three customers who had eligible plans have been able to take advantage of its Go Roam offer for the past several years. Go Roam offered no roaming fees in 71 countries, including many in Europe, the US and Asia. However, the network confirmed it would end its Go Roam offer from contracts/plans purchased after October 20, 211, starting May 2022. However, not all is lost.
What does Three mean by roaming now?
Post-Go Roam will see travellers being charged £2 per day within the EU and £5 outside the EU.
Your phone may be already set up and ready to go, but if not, open the Three app, go to My3 Account > Settings and then look under Using your phone abroad.
What is the job of Go Roam?
Three’s website states that “with Go Roam, you can use your allowance to use data, call and text the UK and other Go Roam destinations, and it won’t cost you a penny more (up to fair usage limits).
You can enjoy Go Roam whether you’re on Pay Monthly plans or Pay As You Go, using a tablet, phone, Mobile Wi-Fi or dongle. If you don’t have Go Roam, you’ll still benefit from lower roaming rates in our Go Roam destinations, letting you roam at no extra cost (up to fair usage limits).”
Even if you have more data than this, the fair usage limit is 12GB, so you’ll be subject to a cap until you return to the UK.
How to keep Go Roam going after it is discontinued
Go Roam support will continue until May 2022. However, if you wish to continue to benefit from this feature, you must have purchased a plan with Go Roam before or on September 30, 2021.
Three announced that customers who signed a contract prior to October 1 2021 will not be affected by the changes.
If you activate your Three plan before October 1, you will retain Go Roam functionality for the duration of your contract. It is possible to continue using Go Roam indefinitely by opting for the unlimited SIM-only plan, which costs £24 per month, which you can then simply renew each month.
