Here’s how you can get the Android 12 Privacy Dashboard for any Android phone.

You don’t have to wait for Google’s new mobile operating system to be released to access the Android 12 Privacy Dashboard. You can access the latest Android 12 Privacy Dashboard feature right now with your Android phone, but you might have to compromise your device’s safety in order to use it.

The Google Play Store offers a free app that allows you to use this feature. It shows you which permissions were used by which apps in the past 24 hours and lets you modify them if necessary. To do this, you will need to grant the app permissions to view your app activity. AT this point, we have to trust the developer’s intentions, but the app appears to be entirely legal at the time of writing.

If you are comfortable installing third-party apps that mimic official tools, here’s how you can get Google’s Privacy dashboard without having to download the Android12 beta.

How to access the Android 12 Privacy Dashboard: Setting up the app

You should be able to follow the steps as long your Android phone has Android 7 or higher. This demonstration was done with a Xiaomi Mi 11 U. Your settings menus might differ slightly if your phone is different.

1. Search for “Privacy Dashboard” in the Google Play Store app. It can be installed like any other Android app.

2. Open the Privacy Dashboard app and grant it permission to Autostart. This allows the app to run at all times your phone is turned on, and it will be able to track your permissions activity.

3. Now, grant Privacy Dashboard location permission. This permission is not to allow the app to read your location but to see which apps have access to that information.

4. Give the app Accessibility permission.

Some phone manufacturers will warn you before you grant access to accessibility because it is a necessary permission. This guide will grant permission. However, if you are uncomfortable with the steps, you can always back out and uninstall the app.

5. The Privacy Dashboard app will now be fully functional if you have granted accessibility permission. To refresh the app, modify the design or adjust your settings, use the buttons at the top right.

Once the app is installed and you have access to your phone’s process, you can learn which apps use what permissions. The camera app, for example, can be opened on the test device to reveal that it has access to the phone’s cameras and its location, as indicated by the icons in the upper right corner.

We can now see that the app’s central ring has been filled to show which permissions were used and how much.
