The iPhone SE (2021) is easily the most valuable product in Apple’s entire catalogue, surpassed by only the iPad 10.2in. Is Apple planning to make the SE line more frequent? We examine the rumours surrounding the next-generation iPhone SE.
Apple’s approach to iPhone SE has not exactly been predictable. The original iPhone SE was released in March 2016. It went without an update for four years, except for a March 2017 storage boost. Many people believed that the iPhone SE was obsoleted by Apple in 2018.
The iPhone SE (2020), which was released in April 2020, was a welcome addition and indicated that Apple may have recognized the need for an affordable option.
This is where the iPhone SE models before it were released:
iPhone SE (16GB & 64GB): 31 March 2016.
iPhone SE (32GB and 64GB versions): 24/03/2017
iPhone SE 2020: 24 April 2020
Apple has stopped selling the top-end, 256GB version of its iPhone SE. However, it is still available at third-party retailers or carriers. This could indicate that Apple is working on a third-generation iPhone SE and that it is beginning to end production.
It is also the most expensive iPhone model in Apple’s budget range. This makes it unlikely that it will be the most popular.
What is the price of an iPhone SE?
Apple is unlikely to change its current pricing structure, which allows the iPhone range to keep the models in their own strata and not impose on others.
What are the new features of the iPhone SE?
Apple has yet to confirm the existence of a new iPhone SE. Therefore, no details are currently available about what it might contain. However, there has been plenty of speculation in the tech industry. Here are some things we believe you might see in the new iPhone SE.
5G
5G connectivity is the most obvious addition to any new model. The most obvious addition to an iPhone 12 model was 5G connectivity. We have seen a feature on many Android phones (including those that cost the same as the iPhone SE in 2020). The quality is available on models such as the OnePlus Nord and Motorola Edge.
5G is not yet certain, however, the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE remain in the current catalogue, but neither had 5G connectivity.
A14 Bionic processor
The iPhone SE (2020) received the same A13 Bionic processing power as the iPhone 11 and 11 flagships. We believe that Apple will follow suit and release an iPhone SE upgrade in 2021. This upgrade could also include the A15 Bionic processor found in the iPhone 13 range.
This won’t cause a problem as the A13 processor is very fast. However, Apple did not skimp on the iPhone SE (2020), so there are indications that this might also be true for a 2021 version. William Yang, a JP Morgan analyst, believes that the next-gen iPhone SE would feature an upgraded chipset. This is likely to be the A14 Bionic.
New design
The iPhone SE 2020 may have received a minor makeover last year. It took on the same frame as the iPhone 8 and its predecessors. However, there has been speculation that Apple might continue this trend with the new model. Apple could move into the larger chassis of an iPhone XR or iPhone 11 to allow Touch ID to be removed and offer a full-screen iPhone experience for those previously reluctant to pay the entry price.
Face ID has become a well-established feature. As such, the cost of parts and construction should have dropped sufficiently to make it affordable on a lower price device. The advantage is that the iPhone XR and 11 frames can be upgraded without replacing the internals. This would allow for a real upgrade of the SE badge.
Night mode
It would be logical that the iPhone SE (2021) will have Night Mode. There are many cameras with Night Mode. It is a shame that the current SE does not have one.
As you can see, there is still much to learn about the new iPhone SE model. As more information becomes available, we’ll keep this article updated.
