Google confirms Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro powered by Google Tensor
Google has made the unusual decision to confirm many details about its upcoming smartphones, the Google Pixel 6 Pro and the Google Pixel 6 Pro.
Here are the design details as leaked:
- The rear has a camera bar running across the entire phone. This design will be available on both the Pixel 6 Pro and Pro. However, the Pixel 6 Pro offers more space than the rear camera bar.
- Google has upgraded the cameras, stating that the new system is too large to fit into a small square like the older devices. Hence, the switch to a larger device.
- The Pro comes with three cameras and a 4x optical zoom telephoto lens.
Google shared images of the device and confirmed that each model has:
- the same three colours, with the Pro receiving a “light polished aluminium” frame and the 6 getting a matte finish.
- the display has curved edges. It seems like a total rethinking of what the Pixel is trying to be. This is a big step away from the rather understated design that was the Pixel 5.
- the phone will have Android 12 and Material You. Many of the experiences will be based on Google’s growing prowess in machine learning. It will drive voice commands and translations and captioning, which will take us to the next point.
This announcement is not about the phones in any way. It’s about Google Tensor. Google was long suspected to be developing its own silicon, codenamed Whitechapel. Now we know that it is called Tensor.
Google claims that Tensor was designed from the user’s perspective to allow for all AI and machine learning applications to run on it, including computational photography and real-time translation.
Tensor’s security is at the core of Tensor, with a new security core as well as Titan M2, which Google claims will allow Pixel 6 to have “the most secure” experience of any phone.
